Burlington Hatchery

The Burlington state hatchery manager reported over 25% of trout being raised there were eaten by predators and never get to be stocked in state streams and ponds! At $3 @ pound for adult fish thousands of dollars are being "lost" every year. Predators include great blue herons, green herons, night herons, king fishers, ospreys, weasels, racoons, skunks, owls and hawks, and otter. TU member Joe Jankowski coordinated with the manager and a design was put together to protect the trout in certain rearing ponds. FVTU contributed both materials and labor during construction. The Farmington Valley Anglers also made important material contributions to the project. Here are some photos taken during construction of the first pond.

Dozens of metal stakes were drilled out about 2" from end. Eye rings will be installed here that will hold cable wire

Industrial strength plastic tie downs help tighten wire mesh fencing to the stakes.
