The Process in pictures
Teachers and coordinators attend the orientation. Held at the CL&P headquarters in Berlin, CT DEP officials along with TIC veterans give an overview of the upcoming year and answer any questions the teachers may have on raising trout.
TIC coordinators assist in setting up the tanks a month prior to the eggs being delivered. The tanks are allowed to acclimate and create a good environment for the eggs. The students and teachers become very familiar with PH, Ammonia and Temperature.
EGG Delivery Day! The eggs are supplied by the CT DEP from their Burlington hatchery. Approximately 100 'eyed' eggs are placed in sterilized thermoses and distributed to the schools. There they are placed in hatching baskets within the aquarium. If all goes well (remember PH, Ammonia and temp?), the eyed eggs should begin to hatch within a month.
During the school year TIC coordinators will work with teachers to ensure success. Duties may include speaking to the students, supplying technical information or fixing broken parts. The fry have lost their egg sacs and are free swimming in the tanks
